Nagasaki, long a hub for trade with both Asia and the West, gave rise to a unique cultural blend known as Wakaran Culture, which intertwines elements of Japanese, Chinese, and Western—particularly Dutch—influences. In this feature, we explore how this fusion is reflected in the world of food through Shippoku cuisine, a culinary tradition that embodies Wakaran Culture; Nagasaki traditional vegetables, which have been cultivated in the region for generations; and Yuko, a rare citrus fruit believed to have been secretly grown in communities of Hidden Christians.
